Before any MI sportsbooks can open, licensures need to be granted first. It certainly looked like Michigan online sportsbooks would become a reality early on in 2020, with March Madness being the goal for retail sports betting to launch.
After MI sports betting was left at a standstill with the previous governor’s veto, Michigan online sports betting is the highlight of a large gambling package that was signed into law by current Governor Gretchen Whitmer on Friday, December 20th, 2019.
Any state in the US can approve online and sports betting, so long as the regulation doesn’t break any federal law. New Jersey won its case at the Supreme Court in 2018 and became one of the first to pass legislation on online betting. Now Sports Betting in New Jersey is thriving in the Garden State and is generating a lot of revenue with protected bettors by licensed bookmakers. Other states have joined in legalizing online betting, with the possibility of sports betting being added in the near future.
Michigan can now join the ranks of states like New Jersey and Pennsylvania, by being able to introduce both retail and online sports betting to its residents, opening up the opportunity to bet on a number of popular sports.
Those of you who have been following this issue closely knew that it was more likely for online sports betting to be legalized before retail outlets. The House Bill 4926 does state that any organization can apply for a sports betting license.
This means Michigan’s many land-based casinos can now apply for a license to allow sports betting on the premises. We’ll look at this in more detail shortly. Legislation for allowing gambling online and MI sports betting was first brought up in 2015.
Michigan has officially approved the legalization of sports betting! We’ll have to wait and what the future holds for MI online sports betting.
In-Person Wagering Versus Online Betting
To the Bill itself.
HB 4926 proposed to allow sports betting and online gambling throughout the state of Michigan. For in-person wagering, this means a number of things.
Land-based casinos are allowed to apply for a sports betting license. This would be the case for both tribal and commercial casinos. So how would it work?
Casinos could open up their own Sportsbooks, offering an online option too. Or, established bookmakers could look to move into the area, either by opening a retail space in a casino or on the high street.
It could also mean that established bookmakers would accept residents of Michigan to sign up or introduce a Michigan-only Sportsbook.
Now to potential Michigan online sportsbooks.
Land-based casinos could offer an online version of their games, adding a Sportsbook too.
Or, like with retail, established bookies could look to creating a Michigan-only site, or allow Michigan residents to join up with their current offerings.
Both online sportsbook betting and in-person betting on sportsbooks are now allowed! We just have to wait for operators or the land-based casinos to set up their online sportsbook.
How To Register At Online Sportsbooks
Right now, it’s legal for residents of Michigan to become members of any online Sportsbook but they still need to be a little patient.
This is due to change at some point in 2020, though, so let’s take a look at how you can register a Michigan online sportsbook account. We expect the sign-up process to be similar to those requested by other States.
For example, WynnBet and PointsBet are in other states, soon to also be in Michigan.
First up, you will need to enter your personal information, including full name, address, date of birth, email address and mobile number. This is done to ensure you are who you say you are: in other words, you’re a Michigan resident old enough to bet.
The minimum age for casino betting is 21 in Michigan, with the pari-mutuel betting age set at 18. It’s expected any MI Sportsbook would request you are at least 21 years old or older in order to sign.
The need for your full address is pretty self-explanatory – to ensure you’re a resident of the State. Your email and mobile number will be used for communication purposes, so it’s important you enter a valid address and phone number.

It’s important that all the information you input at the registration stage is accurate. If you’re found to be in breach of any of the Michigan online sportsbook terms and conditions, your betting account will be suspended.
